At last the river is open yet again for navigation and now
we have to contend with moving debris that have collected with the high water
and are now being released with the opening of the locks, some big stuff too.

There are now quite a few boats moving up stream for the
Bedford River Festival this weekend, which is a massive bi-annual event and
takes up the whole embankment, with stalls, fare ground rides and boating
competitions.
We do expect to see a lot more as the day goes on as I understand
the festival is fully booked. At times over the last three weeks it looked
likely that it would have to be cancelled but EA have managed to get the water
levels down sufficiently for boats to navigate the last section and the
infamous engineers bridge, (well done guys). During the last few days we have
had many boaters riding down in their cars to inspect the river levels, all of
whom have been planning to visit the festival and I have given them my mobile
number, so that they can call to get an update on the level through Great
Barford Bridge.
Good luck to the guys from the Bedford Boat Club who are in
the competitions this weekend.
We have decided to stay here for a few more days as Karl (my
son) and family are coming to see us tomorrow (Saturday), and as this is an
easy spot for them to get to, it makes sense. Whilst here we have made some
good friends from the village, Martin and Clare, who walk their dogs each day and
we have been lucky enough to spend some time with them, taking Socks along to
have some socialising with them.

This morning Clare has taken Sally into town
with her shopping in the car, which is very kind of her; also we are expecting
a council tax bill, seeing as we have been here so long. We have also spent some
time with another couple of boaters named Nick and Polly on NB, Thomas Ryan 2,
who like us have had a scare or two travelling in the floods and are prepared
to wait it out until the river slows down a little.

Nick, I will get you Polly tomorrow
It’s ok going upstream
pushing against the flow, but running with the current downstream is a bit more
difficult on some of the sharp bends, so he is being sensibly cautious (there
is no point taking risks when there isn’t any need to).
On a final note today; my niece Shona is taking part in the
show jumping at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh, so we wish her good luck for the
show and the future.
