9th June 2012

Having spent a day laid up at Aldreth because of high winds, today we set off for Earith and the Westview marina where there were all facilities and diesel. With only 4 miles to run and Hermitage lock, it was going to be a short days travelling before we moored up again.
Leaving our mooring

Once we arrived at Hermitage lock we were entering the last tidal section of the Great Ouse, and it was in the lock that we first recognised the difference in water levels. In the lock we rose some 5 to 6 feet to reach the level of the river, and with a road bridge over the lock it did not leave us much headroom above the boat as you will see in the photograph. Through the lock we made our way up to the marina for fuel and the usual household chores, first giving them a ring to let them know that we were on our way. During the call we were given instructions as to where to moor up for fuel, and we approached very slowly waiting for another small boat to clear the dock.

On reaching the pontoon, the lady called for us to turn and come in the other way round that meant a turn in strong wind and approach with the flow and the wind behind us (scary). We made our turn which left us in the middle of the river and fast approaching where we should be moored, so it was power in reverse to hold our position, with bursts of power stick full over to get us in to the pontoon. I must admit I was very tense, and wasn’t sure that I would make it on this pass, but hey we did and received some very positive praise from other boaters. Fuelled up we moved to the end of the mooring and tied up for the night, which has turned into two days.

Whilst here we have seen some excellent wildlife including a seal, yes a seal this far inland at the top of the tidal Great Ouse.

Today the 10th June, I have spent the day making good the paint damage we recieved when I had the altrecation with Fotheringhay bridge, and washing and polishing the port side of the boat. I must confess it needed doing and I am pleased the day's efforts. Also for the first time in what seems like ages we had a glorious day with sun, sun and more sun.
