It is now the first of May and we are still at Ashton lock on the Nene as the river is still in flood.
As it was a dry day yesterday we walked into Oundle for some groceries and a look around the village. Whilst there we spotted a barbers shop which was open, so with great pleasure I had my hair cut, it seems to grow so quickly and I hate long and unruly locks, besides its easier to keep it tidy when its short. While walking around the town we got a call from the EA guy, who offered to bring us some water and we arranged to be back at the boat in about an hour, so shopping cut short we walked back, or should I say waded back. The river has not burst its banks where we are, however seepage had left places with about six inches of water along the track so we had to steadily walk through it. At one point Sally just stopped as the water was over the rubber part of her boots, laughing I told her to move quickly, otherwise the water would fill them.
Back at the boat we made a cup of tea and waited for the EA guy to arrive, and soon we got the call that he was at the sluice, so I went down to meet him. We carried the first of the water back to the boat and drained it into our holding tank, and he offered to go and fetch us one more, which he did (and a bag of coal for the fire) he is a great help. When leaving he told us that he would be back on Wednesday with more and told us to ring if we needed anything else.
He did inform us that in his opinion we would be here for at least another week before the water would have subsided enough for us to move on. It is not a problem though as we are safely moored, in a great spot with lots of wildlife for us to enjoy. Oh yes we have for the first time we had the Scrabble board out to amuse ourselves, and I have to say we are having a great laugh at the lack of knowledge of the English vocabulary. Sally the bad girl had to use a rude word which made us howl with laughter (but you will never know what it was).
As I write this we believe the water has gone down a little.
